Two Cats In The Same House: Preparation And Useful Tips

Establishing a relationship between two Pets is not always easy. They have different characters and the neighborhood on the same territory can be bothering or angry. It is easier if both cats or cats are purchased together – then you can easily teach them to live together. If you get a second cat later, learn how to act correctly so that the animals become friends.

To increase the chances of feline friendship, experts advise not to use the things of an old-timer for a beginner. Together with the second cat, a separate set should appear in the house – bowls for food, a tray, a basket or a bed. Select your own zone for each pet, following the following recommendations:

  • A place to sleep
    For a cat, this is the most important territory. This is a place where the animal relaxes and feels safe, including during sleep. The new cat should sleep at the maximum possible distance from the old-timer’s resting place at first. At night, close the doors in these rooms – let the animals relax as much as possible at night without fear.
  • Place to eat
    It is important for a cat to sleep and eat well. Your first pet will not tolerate if a newcomer approaches and prevents you from eating. Discontent is often expressed by growling. Feed the newcomer from their own bowls and elsewhere, but give the food at the same time. When the animals get used to each other – put the bowls next to each other.
  • Tray
    Do not allow both Pets to use the same tray. If a newcomer decides to go to the toilet of an old-timer, the latter will probably refuse to use it.

Before the first meeting of two cats, trim both claws and file them – in the event of a fight, the animals are less injured.

How to organize your first meeting correctly

There are several recommendations for how the first meeting of two cats should go, provided that one already lives in the apartment. Open all the doors to the rooms in advance so that the animals can run to different corners.

  • bring the carrier with the second cat in the hallway and wait for the first cat to sniff it;
  • open the door and wait until the animal comes out by itself, do not force it out;
  • observe the behavior of animals, ready to intervene if necessary.

You can’t predict in advance how cats will behave. Perhaps the newcomer will immediately run to the nearest room and hide under the sofa as soon as the carrier opens. If this happens, do not take out the animal. He needs time to settle in and reduce stress.

What the owner can’t do:

  • Do not push cats with their foreheads;
    Animals will protect their borders, and aggression is inevitable. With such a beginning, it is more difficult to make friends with cats.
  • Don’t lock them in a room together;
    Hope that they will make friends, once in the same room, is not worth it. You will provoke aggression. The second cat has not settled in a new place, and the old-timer intends to protect his territory. You can’t avoid a fight.
  • Don’t lock them in different rooms
    Experts say this is the wrong approach. Both animals sense each other’s smell and presence, but they don’t see each other. First, be sure to let the cats get acquainted. All the unknown scares them, as it can threaten and friendship will not work out.

For the first time after Dating, keep both cats under the supervision of your own or other family members. Leave your Pets alone only after successful adaptation.

When you need to intervene

Watch the body language of both cats. An old-time cat will probably growl to show that it is in charge. If the second pet avoids conflict, then all is well. If he looks an old – timer in the eye and growls back, be on your guard. Cats can jump, beat the opponent with their paws, and drive around the room. If possible, do not interfere, but try to understand whether they can get along on the same territory. The process of finding out the relationship between two males is inevitable, the sooner it happens, the sooner the cats will calm down and be able to start making friends.

You need to break contact if you show strong aggression. If the cats make loud noises, grappled in a ball – it’s time to intervene.

Methods to help separate cats:

  • to spritz water from a spray bottle;
  • throw a blanket to frighten the dark;
  • separate with a MOP or other long stick.

Having separated the cats, take the new pet to another room so that the old-timer cat does not worry about losing the fight for territory. After a couple of days, try again to introduce the animals. Repeat your attempts until you can ensure that the cats are safely in each other’s company.

Useful tips on how to make friends with cats

You can make friends with two cats in the same house with the help of smells, pheromones and joint games:

  • engage in joint games, encourage them with praise and treats. Equip your Pets with houses for joint games. Provide several exits so that if necessary, the cats can hide in the shelter and be safe;
  • take an old thing and put it in the old-time cat’s bed to soak it in the smell. After 1-2 nights of sleep, put a new cat in the bed. On the advice of felinologists, sometimes change the bedding places;
  • take a towel and RUB both cats in turn, let them sniff the cloth. On the cheeks of cats have glands that secrete pheromones. They relieve anxiety and help animals “read” information. These pheromones are sold in a veterinary pharmacy;
  • always treat both cats equally. Do not be jealous of a particular location to one of them.

Is it always possible to make friends with two cats

It’s easier to make friends with different-sex cats. The cat will not perceive the cat as a rival and will not defend its territory. All problems will be solved by castration, and felinologists advise to simultaneously sterilize the cat.

Friendship between two cats is more difficult to achieve – this is the most difficult case. It is difficult for an old-time cat to accept an opponent who will live in the same territory with it. Situations where two cats quickly found a common language and do not quarrel are rare and are an exception. More often, their relationship is a series of quiet moments and outbursts of aggression for victory and the right to be called the main one.

If the relationship does not improve, then castration is necessary – this method will deprive them of the manifestation of the instinct that hinders friendship. The common territory will no longer interest the cat as a “springboard” for the ability to continue the genus. Please note that after the operation, you will need to take care of your Pets and keep them away from each other.

The adaptation process can take weeks or even months. In exceptional cases, when the first cat did not accept the second one even after a long time, it is more humane not to expose the animals to constant stress and the risk of getting hurt in a fight and to find good hands for the newcomer.
