The Russian Blue Cat: History, Character and Care

The Russian blue cat is ideal for those who love not only beauty in their Pets, but also affection and tenderness. These purrs combine the qualities that should be in an animal companion, but what is there, in a friend. Loyalty, tenderness, love for the owner, kindness, grace, beauty – all this is in this beauty.

History of the breed

Already from the name it becomes clear that Kisa comes from Russia, more precisely – from the city of Arkhangelsk. Although there is an opinion that the birthplace of the cat is in the East, someone claims that the roots are American, while others are sure that the blue cat originally appeared in England.

Because of these differences, breeders from different parts of the world tried to fix the phenotype of their blue beauties.

This confusion only led to the appearance of 3 breed standards: British, European and American. The differences between them are not so strong, but they are noticeable for those who are seriously engaged in this breed. Despite the fact that the kitty is “Russian blue”, for some reason this beauty has lost its popularity in Russia.

Description of the breed

The Russian blue cat is medium in size, although the body is elongated. But still, the cat, despite its well-developed muscles and strength, looks very elegant and harmonious. And this Russian beauty moves very easily and naturally.

Her fur is like silver, so beautifully shimmering. The color is even blue, although silver stripes only add to the beauty. Short, but very thick, even a little springy when stroking, which is why the Russian blue cat is similar to a plush toy.

The disadvantages include not only an uneven gray-blue color (although stripes are allowed for babies, but over time the color should become one), but also a “sleek” coat (not springy). The face is small, short, can be round or slightly angular (resemble a square), but there are also some small features of the breed. The chin is “strong-willed”, some call it powerful.

But the pads where the antennae grow are perfectly designed, which gives the cat a special look. The ears are sharp, and the nose is medium, straight (not snub-nosed, not flattened).

Her eyes were striking: bright green, like emeralds, set wide apart. But their shape can be different according to the standard: both almond-shaped (British) and round (American). It is considered a disadvantage if there are yellow spots on the iris. The “cons” can be attributed to the bulge of the eye, and their deep fit, and excessive roundness.

The tail is long, not fluffy, and becomes thinner towards the tip. The paws are elegant and long, and the color of the pads on the fingers depends again on the standard: blue in British and pink in American. The disadvantage is considered too “heavy” skeleton, if the cat does not look harmonious (too short or thick paws).

Character

The Russian blue cat has a remarkable character. She is kind, affectionate, homely (she does not like to run far from home, but she will not give up her freedom). Loves its owner, always rubs against it, but shuns others, too wary.

However, there will be no aggression, which makes a representative of this breed an excellent pet. Although kitty is obedient, she can be stubborn. However, it is always clean, it is not difficult to get used to the tray. If your pet is modest and almost invisible, it means that she is looking at the situation. As soon as it becomes comfortable, it will immediately surprise you with its sociability and desire to sit on your hands, RUB and “sing” a song-purr.

Despite all its elegance and nobility, the Russian blue cat is happy to chase a mouse or scold a butterfly. The hunting instinct is perfectly developed. And it is thanks to the well-developed muscles and “light” skeleton, the Russian beauty with a silver-blue coat is almost silent, and, most importantly, almost lightning fast, will catch the “victim”.

Knowing this feature of the character, you can safely choose active games, buy toys (balls, mice). Why, in the old-fashioned way, tie a piece of paper or a rag to a thread and drag it along the floor or hang it, and even an adult pet will behave like a small child. If there are children in the family, the Russian blue cat will not just get along with them, but will be happy to join the games.

Therefore, if your family likes a measured lifestyle, quiet rest, then this cat is unlikely to suit you. And kittens are able to demolish the house at all, they are so energetic and playful.

Care and maintenance

There is nothing complicated in caring for a Russian blue cat. It is enough to keep its tray, bowls and sleeping area clean, and give it a balanced and high-quality food. Do not forget about preventive measures: drive parasites in time, vaccinate the animal.

Despite the fact that the coat is thick and short, it requires careful weekly combing. You need to teach your pet to comb from childhood, so that in adulthood the cat gets pleasure from the fact that you pass a special rubber brush first against the fur, and then along its growth.

Wash only if necessary.

Predisposition to diseases

The Russian blue cat has a predisposition to diseases of the respiratory and digestive systems.

  • The rhinotracheitis. This is an infectious disease that affects not only the respiratory system, but also causes inflammation of the conjunctiva. If a cat gets sick, it will die without specific treatment. It is much easier to vaccinate a pet as a kitten, so that the developed antibodies protect the cat.
  • Peritonitis, gastritis and other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. If you feed the animal incorrectly, then problems with digestion and metabolism can not be avoided.
