Samoyed: Character and Life Expectancy

When you first see a dog with an unusual breed name — Samoyed — very few people remain indifferent and are not fascinated by its appearance. The owner of the “snow coat” for several centuries conquers people with her kindness and devotion.

Origin of the breed

There are several variants of the origin of the name of the Samoyed dog breed:

  • Еhe dog was born in the nomadic tribes of the Nenets, previously called “Samoyeds”, “samoedins”, that is, living separately, “samoed”, and the name Samoyed came from the name of the tribe to which the animals belonged;
  • Еhe breed originated in an ancient tribe that lived on the territory of modern Finland, which was called “Sami”, the land where they lived — “samo land” or “saam jedna”, hence “SamoyedS;
  • Дiving in the North, among the snowy expanses, the dogs harnessed to the sled merged with the surrounding whiteness and it might seem that the sled moves independently, they go themselves, hence the “self — food”.
  • Samoyed – pronunciation [sa]-[mo]-[YED]

Despite the fact that the Samoyed dog was known to the ancient Northern tribes for three thousand years, it was only introduced to the world at the end of the nineteenth century.

The introduction of the Samoyed dog to the world was facilitated by the zoologist from England Ernst Kilburn-Scott. Ernst, having lived with the Nenets for three months, was fascinated by an extremely beautiful and courageous dog. He returned to his homeland in 1889 with a Suit puppy, which became the progenitor of the breed in Europe.

In 1909, kilbourne-Scott, a cynologist, opened the first Samoyed barking dog lovers ‘ club in England, where a breed standard was developed, the data of which are still used today.

The breed standard

The international cynological Federation (FCI) assigned this breed to group 5 “Spitz, Northern sled dogs, primitive”, subgroup “Northern sled dogs”. The weight of the animal varies from 23 to 30 kilograms, the height at the withers for boys from 57 to 60 centimeters, for girls — 53-56 centimeters.

The eyes are elongated, deep-set, dark brown in color, with a dark outline around the eyes. Ears at a wide distance from each other, standing; in puppies up to one month, the ears are hanging. Animals have a strong jaw, scissor bite. The lips are tight and have a black color. Surprisingly, the slightly raised corners of the mouth form the so-called “smile” of the Samoyed dog, which makes it even more charming.

Life expectancy is 12-15 years.

The coat is thick and double: a soft but dense undercoat and a stiff, straight outer coat. The most common color is white or white with pale yellow. The tail is long, set high, and fits snugly to the body.

Health, typical diseases

It is believed that Samoyeds have good health and are rarely susceptible to diseases. The pet will please the owners if the risk factors for the development of hereditary diseases are excluded from the puppy age. When systematizing possible genetic abnormalities, the following groups of diseases characteristic of Samoyed dogs are distinguished:

  • diseases of the visual organs (retinal atrophy, cataracts, glaucoma);
  • hip dysplasia;
  • congenital deafness;
  • infectious diseases of the urinary tract;
  • cardiovascular diseases;
  • diabetes.

The rule for the pet owner should be a regular visit to the veterinary office: for a puppy 2-3 times a month, for an adult dog once a quarter.

Periodic visits to the clinic will allow you to teach the animal to checkups without stressful situations and help control the process of forming the correct bite, exclude or correct deviations in the development of hip joints in a timely manner, and check the condition of the pet’s eyes for prompt treatment.

In addition, tests of the animal (blood, urine, parasitological), passed in the clinic, will allow the owner to be confident in the health of the pet. And vaccinations will protect the dog from infections. You can always check the recommended vaccination schedule at the veterinary clinic.

Eye diseases in case of neglect can lead the animal to blindness. You should carefully monitor the condition of your pet’s eyes, contact a specialist at the slightest clouding, and do not self-medicate in any case.

To avoid heavy loads on the joints during the formation of the skeleton and exclude dysplasia, it is recommended that dogs of puppy age be carried on their hands when descending stairs, monitor moderate physical activity of the puppy, and avoid long running and jumping.

For timely detection of cardiovascular pathologies, the owner of the dog should contact the clinic if the following symptoms appear in the pet:

  • increased fatigue;
  • dry cough;
  • fainting States;
  • cyanosis of the tongue;
  • shortness of breath;
  • an increase in the abdomen.

To prevent the development of diabetes, only careful monitoring of the pet will help. If the dog suddenly starts to freeze, is in a slow, sluggish state, often drinks and goes to the toilet, then you need to contact the clinic for a competent diagnosis.

It is important to remember that advanced diabetes causes cataracts — a disease to which Samoyed dogs are predisposed, and cataracts, in turn, deprive the animal of vision.

Character

Samoyed dogs are called big fluffy antidepressants. At the genetic level of animals, it is laid down that they can not harm humans.

Samoyeds are trusting, so they make ineffective guards, although the dogs bark very loudly. This is the kindest breed, it requires a lot of walking, and walking should be interesting.

From walking for ten minutes just need to give it for Samoyed: dog would be unhappy, but the energy is not wasted on the walk, will come home and manifest in the form of clutter that will suit the animal. Often Pets show stubbornness.

This working breed of dog likes to be busy, they like to work with people and constantly monitor the situation. They are also extremely observant, which allows animals to sometimes anticipate the owner’s commands.

Samoyeds love children, tolerate their pranks. These dogs are balanced, calm and patient animals. No wonder it is said that the Samoyed dog is a nanny during the day, and a hot water bottle at night. Thanks to its unique coat, the dog is very warm.

It must be remembered that these are cunning dogs, and they like to make their own decisions, most often to their advantage. Character traits should be taken into account when training. They are thoughtful dogs that learn commands easily and are amenable to training.

How to choose a puppy

If the decision is made and the person has chosen the Samoyed Laika, then it is necessary to understand that this is a serious and large dog, which should not be confused with a service or guard dog. Therefore, it is unacceptable to keep an animal in a kennel.

When choosing a pet, you need to answer the question: who should it become for the owner: a friend or a champion?

If the future owner of the dog does not have enough time for long, active walks with the pet, then the choice on the Samoyed dog should not be stopped.

When selecting a puppy, you should read the results of medical studies of its parents, including dysplasia. When dogs participate in exhibitions, it is advisable to view diplomas and pedigree passports.

Usually, when examining the litter, a playful puppy is chosen, which touched the heart and involuntarily made you smile with relaxed and sincere flirtations.

Care features

The main focus in grooming (except for regular medical examinations and procedures) is grooming. Samoyeds are the owners of a unique wool that has the ability to self — clean: inside the fluff — it is difficult to wet, on top — hard wool — all the dirt rolls off.

The coat should be combed twice a week and during the moulting period — every day. It can be used for knitting various items (belts, socks, and others).

It is better to keep the animal in an air-conditioned apartment: because of the thick undercoat, Samoyed dogs can hardly tolerate the heat.

You need to wash the animal no more than once every six months, walk twice a day for 1.5-2 hours. On a walk when training a dog, the contact between the pet and the owner is strengthened, later developing into a devoted friendship. After a walk and splashing out energy on the street, the pet will lie quietly at home.

Feed the animal twice a day after walking. In the diet, meat should occupy at least 30%. Be careful to include egg white in the menu because of a possible allergic reaction.

Food food must be purchased separately when using natural food, since natural food will not allow you to fully meet the needs of an active pet for minerals and vitamins. A veterinarian will help you make the right choice of medications.

Samoyeds are prone to bloating. To avoid running processes in a vital organ, you should pay attention to this and consult a specialist in time.

Whatever the owner’s choice: natural food or balanced ready-made food, the dog should always have access to clean drinking water.

Buying the kindest Samoyed dog in the house, you need to understand that from this moment on, the owner has an assistant in all matters. And how to use it for the benefit of the household is up to the owner.

And on the part of an extremely beautiful pet, everyone is guaranteed a characteristic “smile”, loyalty, calmness and patience.
