Molting is a normal process. Thanks to it, there is a gradual change of coat. For example, if the animal is hot (summer is approaching or the heating period in the apartment).
Without molting, the pet will be very hot, which is why some of the hairs fall out.
However, in some cases, this change of coat is not associated with an increase in temperature in the cat’s environment.
Or the amount of hair falling out is too large. Then the owner should be wary, because a strong molt can be a symptom of the disease.
Causes of severe hair loss
When the house is very hot, the air is too dry, and the light bulbs are almost constantly burning yellow, the cat sheds a lot. This is good and cozy for a person, but such conditions are not suitable for a pet. That is why molting is an adaptive reaction.
Often the cat sheds due to lack of vitamins. This may be due to an incorrectly compiled diet, when the cat’s menu is practically devoid of useful substances. It’s either low-quality food, or the same products every day. The first to react to hypovitaminosis wool, if you do not catch yourself in time, there will be much more serious complications.
Even a person has dandruff or hair loss if they use cosmetics that are intended for a different type of hair and skin. Why can’t a cat have the same reaction?
Food, medicines, household chemicals, plants, insect bites, dust, and much more. But if the cat suffers from an allergic reaction, it not only sheds, but also itches, from the nose and eyes begins to flow. The cat will start sneezing, maybe even coughing, and if the pet is not helped, it will get worse and worse every day.
Both cutaneous (fleas, hair-eaters) and intestinal helminths can cause the cat to lose a lot of hair. If the cutaneous act “directly”, then intestinal worms – “indirectly”, releasing toxins in the course of their life. These toxins become an allergen for the body of a healthy pet.
The most famous disease is microsporia (in the common people – lichen). Can easily switch from a cat to a human. Of course, in this case, the cat sheds not completely, but only in certain areas, but still do not write off this reason.
External stimuli that lead to the disorder, the cat abounds. On a nervous basis, animals shed a lot, may itch, sleep poorly, or, on the contrary, suspiciously long and hard (as if disconnected from the outside world). The cat may start to lose weight.
Skin diseases, for example, dermatitis. Burns (chemical, solar, thermal) can also lead to increased hair loss (but only on the affected area of tissue, and not throughout the body).
With them, the animal’s body weakens, all forces are spent on the recovery of the pet, restoring the functions of the affected organs. The beginning of inflammation can be “suggested” by a dull coat, which begins to thin out over time. The cat needs veterinary help, even if you think that everything is fine with it.
The predisposition. We must not forget about it. The most susceptible to heavy molting is a short-haired cat, but with a very thick undercoat (for example, a British one).
How can a veterinarian help you?
First of all, you need to understand why the cat is shedding so much. And only then solve the problem. It is not recommended to try to determine the cause yourself. This should be done by a veterinarian after a thorough examination of the cat and some research (including laboratory blood tests).
If the veterinarian decides that it is an Allergy, then antihistamines will be prescribed, and you will have to identify and remove the allergen. Add vitamins to the diet, but you can only do this after the veterinarian tells you exactly what vitamins and minerals your pet lacks.
For wool, fatty acids (omega-3 and others) are necessary, thanks to them, the coat will Shine, sparkle, and become thicker. Perform deworming. And don’t forget about it, make a schedule, stick to it. Get rid of fleas and other skin parasites. Yes, they may not be to blame for the fact that the cat sheds, but prevention has never harmed (if in reasonable quantities, of course).
That will help in addition to treatment
- Start with what’s in the house: remove the flowering plants, do a few wet sweeps so that there is no dust and no trace left, use less household chemicals.
- Review your diet: choose hypoallergenic products (chicken, rabbit, veal, buckwheat).
- Normalize the conditions in the house. Buy a humidifier (preferably ultrasonic, so the animal will not be burned by steam, because it is cold).
- Ventilate the room more often. If possible, reduce the heat of the batteries during the heating season.
And try not to stress the cat. Sometimes, according to the results of examination and tests, the pet is completely healthy, and doctors throw up their hands, not understanding why the animal is shedding so much.
And the reason is banal – the house has a tense situation, or there was a move, repairs, children or Pets appeared. In General, it is necessary to normalize the food, climate in the house and remove all stress factors and allergens, as the pet is much easier. But in no case should you self-medicate. A face-to-face visit with a very shedding cat to the vet is mandatory!
