They say that dogs are attached to a person, and a cat – to the house. Cats do not like to change the situation, but sometimes the animal needs to be transported a long distance by public transport. Everything will go smoothly and the stress of the cat will be minimal if you follow the useful recommendations.
If you have a long trip by bus or train, or a flight by plane – you need to read the rules for transporting animals on the website of the carrier company. When theoretical knowledge is obtained, you can start practical training. It consists of two actions:
- first, make sure that your vet passport contains all the necessary vaccinations, including rabies. The vaccination is done no later than a year before the trip, and no earlier than a month. If the cat does not have a veterinary passport, the veterinarian will issue it.
- second, buy a container to transport the animal. What it should be – read below, depending on the type of transport, the requirements may vary greatly. And in order for the cat to get used to carrying, you need to introduce it to a temporary “home” in advance. The main requirements for the container are low weight with good strength.
Only a healthy animal is transported – the cat should not have a sickly appearance. Infections and parasitic infestations that are dangerous to others must be cured. And six hours before departure, do not give your pet food. In the bus and train Parking lots, the cat can be taken out or taken out.
Transportation by bus
Rules of transportation of the cat in the long-distance buses are regulated by a specially established rules. According to them, the carriage of an animal is considered as the carriage of hand Luggage. The container must have a blind bottom, and its dimensions must not exceed the permissible (length, width and depth in total do not exceed 120 cm). Otherwise, you will need to pay a certain amount and get a receipt for hand Luggage.
Carrying a cat on the bus is kept in your hands, but if the trip duration is more than a few hours, it is advisable to buy additional space to put the container on it.
In addition to the blind bottom, the container must have reliable locks and strong walls, and there must be good ventilation. So that the passenger carrying the cat does not cause inconvenience, the animal should not be able to get out. So the driver will not worry that your pet will dirty the interior.
Transportation by train
Russian Railways sets the rules for transporting Pets on long-distance trains. You need to immediately take a ticket to the car, where travel with animals is allowed. Next, you pay for a receipt for carrying hand Luggage weighing up to 20 kg, where a note is made that the cat is being transported in a container. You can pay for your pet’s travel in advance or buy a “ticket” before departure.
The container for transporting an animal on a train should be well ventilated, have strong walls and a reliable lock, and nothing should leak or spill out of the carrier. The pet in its temporary “home” will travel in a special place provided for carrying hand Luggage.
Transportation by plane
The cat can be taken on a flight subject to payment for transportation, but if the carrier with it weighs more than 8 kg, it will fly in the Luggage compartment. The number of animals on Board is limited, and when buying a ticket, immediately inform that you will not fly alone. The airline may have internal rules regarding the transportation of Pets.
If the cat is flying in the cabin, the container can be placed either on your lap or under the seat of the seat in front. The General rule is that the carrier must be supervised. Passengers with Pets do not sit in the seats at the emergency exits. You can let the cat into the salon with the permission of the service staff.
Air carriers have stricter container requirements. For a small animal, a soft bag with a hard bottom is also suitable. Adult cats are transported in a strong metal, wooden or plastic ventilated container (not homemade) with a maximum size of 25x35x45 cm. Strong locks and handles are required.
If the cat carrier is checked in, you will need to weigh it at the check-in Desk, inform the Registrar about the animal, as well as your contact details. The compartment where the pet will fly will be heated, and if desired, you can go there during the flight.
Travel to another country
If you have to go to another country, the preparation will be more serious. First of all, check whether it is forbidden to enter four-legged. Also, individual countries set their own import rules.
With the cat’s documents, everything is more serious. To do everything in time, go to the veterinarian in 3-4 months and get all the necessary vaccinations, specifying which ones are needed for a visit to a specific country. In addition to a completed veterinary passport (in English and with a color photo), you will also need a veterinary certificate in form 1 with a seal to leave the country. It is issued by the state veterinarian. When crossing the border, the certificate is changed to an entry permit.
Before the trip, the animal must be chipped. A chip with a number will be implanted under the cat’s skin – this will make it easier to find the owner if the pet is lost. The chip is valid for 25 years, and the owner receives a corresponding certificate.
When collecting bags, take food and water for the animal, and hygiene will be provided with wet wipes and disposable diapers. By putting a little filler on the diaper, you can get rid of the unpleasant smell on the trip. In winter, a warm blanket will be useful. If you are worried that the cat will not survive the trip, the veterinarian will prescribe a safe sedative or advise a drug for motion sickness.
Having taken care of everything in advance and accustomed the animal to the container, you can count on the fact that the trip or flight will go smoothly.
